4718

I was reading SK's blog, and he shared in a recent post about a recent experience when he bought 4718 as a 4-D lottery, but the winning number that came out was 7841.

I wanted to post a comment, but somehow Blogger kept giving me problems. =(

So SK, this is for you.

"For any 4-digit number with distinct digits, there are 24 permutations to play around the numbers.

7841, 7481, 4718, 4178 etc....

Putting it in another way, you can expect to see about 23 other permutations on average before you actually see your exact number winning!

So close is actually so far. =("

Yes, the 24 permutations are the result of 1×2×3×4. If there was a 5 digit number, there would be 120 permutations. It increases massively with every new digit.

ic, very interesting!

Interesting. My co-workers tell me that our local lottery allows you to pick 3 or 4 numbers and play them to win in any combination. The payout is a lot lower, but it improves the odds--not enough for me to play though!

Lady Luck is hard to find on any given day for lottery! I might be tempted to just buy one for the heck of it when the lottery man comes along. None of my folks want to 'mess' around with lottery!

Striking the top 3 prize in 4-D or the jackpot of any of the local lotteries is on my Vision Board.

Don't said we don't have the luck when we don't even make the effort to buy one. If we do, when Lady Luck comes smiling, any number we buy or any ticket we hold shall be the winner.

If someone in this land can be a winner, who says we can't! It's fair game for everyone ... everyone and anyone stands a chance to that pot of gold!

Typically, if you buy $1, to get the 24-permutation, it means you have to pay 24 times.

However, the SG government lottery has this system called iBet. IBet allows you to play full-permutation at any chosen total cost, for example, $2, but of course, pay-out will be proportionately lesser. :)

Yes ! no wonder you are a mathematician. Then is Toto even worse???

Great! 24 permutations for 4 different numbers and if there are two or three same numbers the permutations get lesser eg 7788 or even 'best' 8888. Since you have wet your head might as well go for a shower haha (old Chinese saying). Maybe you would love to do this (quite positive you would) as this tickles your mind. Have a small discussion about luck and a joker friend was saying the odds of striking first prize for 4D is XX% (sorry cant remember) but someone argued if you dont buy the chances of striking is zero.
Since you love maths and analysis so much what would be the percentage of striking? It is something like 0.0XXX%. tQ (Disclaimer: sorry not responsible if the gaming taikor gives you a hard time, haha)

am abit tempted to buy 4D lately actually, coz money is tight lah wat else =.= if im a mathematician, i would do all the homework first (observation and calculation) then buy one or two, but no lah even have problem adding two 2-digit numbers in my head now, better stick to hard work first lest i pamper myself too much with an unexpected win =.=

Dats why I never buy 4D and Toto, because the expected gain is < 0. I try for football betting because at least the outcome can be influenced by good or bad judgement (unfortunately in recent times it is more bad than good.)

My number is also came out that one. Hokkien saying, "tiok ji boh tiok lui"(strike the numbers but not the money). sigh...
