Everyone knows that Malaysia is infested with plenty of social problems. High incidence of crimes, growing inflation, rampant bribery, growing rich-poor divide, unfair Bumiputra policies etc...
But, I still proudly regard myself as a Malaysian despite all the apparent flaws. Close friends should be very well aware of that.
I make self-depreciation jokes about my country, but it doesn't mean I'm trying to degrade it. I was trying to emphasize the conspicuous issues that my country needs to tackle.
It isn't hard to guess which political party my family members vote for yesterday. Casting a vote against the ruling party (Barisan Nasional) is our way of showing disapproval about how little was done these years.
Imagine our delight when we hear the results over the radio. The opposition has won 4 more states, adding Perak, Penang, Selangor and Kedah to Kelantan.
Selangor is where Kuala Lumpur, the heart of Malaysia is. Our capital city and where Putrajaya (our main government administration building) is. That to me, means the opponents are knocking on the doors of Barisan Nasional.
Why not take my favourite Johor state too? Take it and do something about the alarming crime rates. One of my relatives have already been robbed and beaten to a pulp while driving his motorcycle in the wee hours to work. Another has been robbed at knife-point. And many more. When the people close to you are victims of crimes, you can't help but be very cautious when stepping back to the place.
With Barisan Nasional (BN) not being able to get the minimum 2/3 of the votes, they have lost the power to amend the Constitution.
I must clarify my stand that being happy about BN losing the seats doesn't neccessarily imply that I support the Opposition. When a horse is dying and no common medication works on it, you will try every possible cure to keep it alive, no matter how insane some will sound. And pray it works.
Yes, the people have won.
But I still see no light to the end of this dark tunnel.
Walk the walk, and don't just talk the talk.
Action speak louder than words.
Malaysia boleh!!
On a side note, anyone can tell me if famous Malaysian Blogger, Jeff Ooi, managed to win a seat?

Yes, BN is bad. But I am not sure if the other parties are any better. The next few years are uncertain. I hope BN, and particularly UMNO, will learn from its mistake.
