The Fun Theory

Anyone read the book called Fish! ?

This fishy book talk about the real-life Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, made famous for having FUN workers who throw fish around (and even invite the customers into the fun). Because the staff give so much attention to the customers, it was big business for the market and fun for everyone. And also a fictional story about how the Fish! philosophy was applied to a manager's company to improve both productivity and morale.

It is interesting to note that the people working at the Pike Place fish market actually felt disgusted with the book, but hey, it is nonetheless an interesting book.

If only all our companies can be just as fun, we can achieve great results.

To prove my point, take the look at the social experiment below, on how fun can actually make people take the stairs instead of the escalator.

(Please turn on the volume)

Now, how do you convince your boss that having fun is good for the company?

Reminds me of the Google and Zappos! offices. It takes a huge paradigm shift for offices to adopt play in their work environment. That piano stairs sure look fun. I wonder though if anyone has tripped and fallen off it. LOL!

I should buy the book for my old boss. His office was voted the worst place to work in our organization.

Now I want to visit the market!

I don't consider throwing fish around as fun. In the same way, some people think drinking is fun, but I am a teetotaler.

I guess fun management is not so easy...

I read it a few years back (we had a copy at the office) and gave a simple powerpoint presentation on the three pointers which, I must say, was well received. The point is, we all want to have fun in whatever we do, if possible and we have already chosen the place of work. My boss always laughed the loudest at any jokes then.

Now, how to convince your boss having fun is good? Give a presentation on "Fish!" for all to attend (including your boss)? Haha...

Btw, if I remember correctly, there are even seminars conducted on the "Fish!" theory back then...

There is another book I strongly recommend, perhaps not as "famous": "Leadership and Self-deception"...I think this works better on a small group discussion basis, which I underwent. Never look back.

And not to forget, there was "Gung Ho!"...

Work hard and play harder..if studying is fun there will be fewer dropouts and if working is fun there will be fewer leavers..

For some straight-laced people, fun is not work.

I like the idea of having fun whilst seriously doing my job! :)

Good one, bro. I think too many bosses are too much caught up in numbers and deadlines instead of seeing what could be done to improve everyone's work morals and energy.

The piano would be fun at first. But imagine after a week, a month? How many would still prefer it over the escalator? Not many, if you ask me :)
