Cow's milk are for cows.

Taylor Swift is yummy

As much as I love milk, I have been cutting down on fresh milk consumption for some time, because I want to reduce my protein intake. Trying to do the same for carbohydrates, but I am a carbo junkie - can't live without rice and noodles. =p

Anyway, if you google around for cow's milk, you may come across many articles that downplays the importance of cow's milk.

I will summarise some of the findings here.

(1) Any mucus-forming food, dairy being at the top of his list, is poison.

(2) A newborn's digestive system that is not yet developed is ill-equipped to handle milk protein. That's why many infants display many negative symptoms (eczema for example) after consumption of cow's milk.

(3) Scientists are finding correlations between milk and heart diseases, obesity and breast cancer (and people actually wonder why these diseases are so prevalent).

(4) While advertisements stress on how much more calcium their milk has, what they didn't tell you is the low bioavailability - cow's milk can have tons of calcium but they are in a form that is not easily absorbed by the human's body. So you should get your calcium by consuming leafy vegetables and beans (and supplements, if you are into it) instead.

(5) Cows eat grass. And ever wonder how some cows (and the grass) grow so fast and "healthy"? Steroids, stabilisers, hormones etc... Chemical milk, anyone?

And if you are still not convinced, someone written a book called "Don't drink your Milk! - New Frightening Medical Facts about the World's Most Overrated Nutrient".

Don't drink your Milk!

All in all...
If you are a cow, then cow's milk are for you!

Else you might want to consider soya bean milk, which has no cholesterol and little saturated fats, contains isoflavones (which are antioxidants) and won't cause any milk allergy/lactose intolerance.

About the Author: Shingo T has nothing against cows, other than the enormous amount of greenhouse gases (methane) that cows produce when they fart.

I'm lactose intolerant. So unless I want to have bouts of diarrohea and cramps, I avoid drinking milk at all cost. :D

One more of those mindless nutrient studies eh. I guess the rationale is dont drink the milk, eat the cow :(

The study holds until another empirical researcher comes around and writes a paper on its merits....

Many East Asians are lactose intolerant, so I guess milk is not the preferred drink in the Far East. However since I was a baby, I lived on the countryside, our neighbors had cows and we always got fresh unprocessed milk for allowing them to harvest our grass (we didn't have a farm, but we have few meadows). I always liked milk, but I don't drink it all the time. I think books can be written about everything, because they sell. Milk is good, Milk is bad, there's Global warming, there is no Global warming, we're running out of oil, there's enough oil for centuries etc... you get my drift :)

With milk it's like that: For some it may be harmful, for some it's healthy. The best thing about humans is that we're so different. So it's not about pro or contra milk, it's about living your life to the fullest. Btw, wouldn't you wanna kiss wifey, if she had a cute milk-moustache? :P

i really am quite used to having a cup of milk and yoghurt for breakfast.. i now sometims wonder whether i'm intaking too much protein and consuming too much of dairy products??

and the few facts that you listed kind of make sense to me.. so maybe i shall switch to soya milk instead?? but i guess yoghurt is still necessary because of the good bacteria that helps the digestive system..

I agree that milk isn't good for you. As one of my family members is a doctor, we had some discussion on this quite sometime ago. Drink a bit is alright but not often. Actually, caucasians have many problems, a lot more than Asians. If you speak hokkien, I like to say they are "chah su".

Hmm, how about human milk? Should be more suited for us since its from the same species.

Cows don't drink milk..haha.

I don't really take fresh milk. Unless I am dining out and I usually take it in my English tea. I prefer drinking soy milk or having it in the form of powdered milk.

I LOVE SOY BEAN DRINKS. But you know, they don't have any that can match Yeo's soy bean or any soy bean at all like those we have back home.

I miss having soy bean drinks.....

Like a baby's tummy, mine doesn't tolerate milk too well. But not severe enough to call it lactose intolerance :p

Haha Mei Teng's comment made me recollect a seminar many many years ago where the motivation guru told a story about Pak Busu and his magical power oblada obladi...then asked all of us to call out the power of Pak Busu with his name BUSU...Busu Busu.. together loudly for 8 times and thereafter he posed this question spontaneous 'lembu minum..??[cow drink..?]...and some 'smart' fellas answered 'susu'[milk] immediately..:(

Yah, milk is seriously over-rated. even motivational guru Tony Robbins also urged against drinking milk daily as a habit.

Soya bean milk is the protein and calcium of choice for we asians lah. In fact ST had an article that says that most chinese and malays are lactose intolerant !

There's an email (a very long one at that) circulating for a while now about the health hazard of milk. It's written by a lady scientist, who has had several operations on cancerous parts of her body, looking for an answer as to why women in China hardly get the disease vis-a-vis women of the west. After extensive research, she and her husband (also a scientist) discovered that Chinese women don't drink milk.

She then stopped consuming all milk products. Her tumours disappeared. She lives to tell the tale, so to speak.

I have a colleague who had breast cancer and during her treatment period, refrained totally from milk products. She's now approaching her fifth year after her operation. She is still keeping to a diet of very very little milk products.

Sometimes I think milk is one of those great marketing conspiracy by milk companies, though I will agree with Nino that cow's milk is the natural choice for those living on countrysides.

Lizzy:
haha, I guess I drink too many variety of soya bean milk, and now Yeo's is one of my least preferred option. I'm choosy, haha.

Bananaz:
haha, I got tricked before by that. Milk and cow are like natural associations. =p

As for soya bean products, they are not that great either. Another email I read is written by a lady who eat and drink soya products all the time.

She ended up with continuous problem with tumours and finally realised that her obsession with soya is the cause of her problems. She's now avoiding soya products and urging people to do so.

We had a doctor come into our office to give a talk on cancer. Two items he said will always stick to mind. One is that soya beans are not to be taken in excess because soya is rather close in properties to eostrogen (the female hormone) and eostrogen is the cause of cancer. The other item he said that is enlightening is to also remove the ovaries when undergoing hysterectomy. Reason being eostrogen is produced by the ovaries and when the ovaries are removed, chances of getting cancer reduces from 95% to 5%. Bottomline, soya is not such a great product esp for ladies.

The above is just for info - just sharing what I read and understood from the doctor's talk.

Whatever it is, everything in moderation is a safe bet.

I love milk! Fresh milk. I've read info like this before from circulated emails and some other internet sources but I still like and drink milk. I'm in fact drinking more now that we bought a coffee maker machine at home and there are huge bottles of Meji fresh white milk in my fridge always (to make cappuccino) and I really can't stop myself from reaching a glass every morning and night.

I has nothing aginst cows and I is gonna die soon.

haha, why does everyone love Meiji milk? I find it too sweet for my liking.

Some people say milk is a culprit for cancer. Not sure how true it is...

Twilight Man said...

I am a milk lover and would have kept a cow in my kitchen for fresh milk daily. However, I was made to be aware that it has links to cancer for sure and it's not advisable to drink milk after the age of 30 years old. So, I am also taking Calcium from USANA's supplement. This brand has 5 star rating in the pharmacy's book whereas Amway is only half star. I am not selling anything to you! LOL

Jo said...

Are you sure what you drank was Meiji? Coz Meiji milk tastes just like those farm fresh milk. Fresh milk as in not those sweet vanilla kind like HL and Daisy Hi-Lo. I prefer those kind of milk rather than the sweet kind too. Hmm... Maybe Meiji as a vanilla flavoured one?

Shingo T said...

Twilight:
incidentally, I also consume supplements from the same brand, and also read the same comparison guide. =p

Jo:
oops, think what I drank was Meiji yoghurt. Don't think I have really drank Meiji milk before.

Of course cow's milk are for baby cows. What the hell are humans doing drinking cow's milk?

I have also read a report that says that instead of preventing osteoporosis, cow's milk promotes it.

But of course the milk industry is fast to deny this. And talking about the calcium absorption, you will be surprised to learn that the milk industry actually stated that the calcium in milk is more bioavailable to our body compares to calcium from vegetables.

So who'r right and who's wrong? Depends on which side you are on. I think everything in moderation is the best bet. Meantime, I shall enjoy my ice cream (made from cow's milk) occasionally : )
